Today a group of five intrepid knitters from my Tuesday Knit Night group hit the road with intentions of visiting three somewhat local yarn stores and one restaurant. And….we did just that!
First up on our “to-do” list was a visit to the new Fig Tree Alley in downtown Sacramento.
Fig Tree Alley is a small, but nice shop. They carry knitting machine yarns (cones) and some fiber for spinning in addition to the yarn and accessories which fill their small front room. If you’re already downtown, this might be a good place to stop for a quick yarn fix, but due to it’s size and limited selection, is probably not a “destination” shop. One last thought, Fig Tree Alley is at the top of set of steep stairs, so if stairs are a problem for you, be fore-warned.
Stop number two was to one of our “local” favorites; Babetta’s Yarns and Gifts in Fair Oaks.
I first visited Babetta’s three years ago, on my very first yarn crawl. I remember how over-whelming that experience was, especially since Lorie had same reaction today. Here, I was like a kid in a candy store. Malabrigo Silky Merino, Lorna’s Laces, Cascade 220 Superwash, and some Tatmy Tweed all found their way into my basket. Good thing I just gave away a whole bunch of yarn last week to make room for nice, fresh stash!

Wasn’t I clever? I managed to get into the picture, too. 🙂
By the time we left Babetta’s we were all famished. I pointed the car in the general direction of “home” and Shelby’s Place, while we discussed where to grab some lunch. Mimi’s Cafe is the answer we arrived at, and a very nice meal there refreshed everyone enough to carry us through our final stop.
Last, but certainly not least, was Shelby’s Place, in Natomas. Recently moved into a new, larger space, Shelby’s is a very pleasant place to shop for yarn, patterens, and accessories. She now carries Malabrigo and Lorna’s Laces, in addition to her very nice selection of Cascade yarns and number of very nice brands and fibers. Shelby’s is close enough to home to be counted as a true LYS for our group, and someday we plan to attend their Wednesday Knit Night just for fun.
Amy also documented our day out, and truthfully, she got better (and more) pics than I did, so why not skip on over to her blog for another perspective?
