The Weekend Report (part I)

So, earlier Saturday morning than I usually like to be out and about Jim and I packed up the car, picked up Margaret and Sheila, and took off for the 144th Annual Scottish Highland Games in Pleasanton. Traffic was amazing! We arrived by about 11:00 a.m., in plenty of time to secure seats in the grandstands (good ones, even) for the Opening Ceremonies.

As the dignitaries were running late (what a surprise) they ran the Kilted Mile first. The children under 16 started the race…

Women started next and the men were the last to go.
First over the finish line was a young boy, second an adult woman, and after that a few more women, then the first man, then more kids, and so on until at long last the youngest runners (3 & 5) got their mom, who wasn’t officially in the race, over the finish line!

The lovely wagon, pulled by two Clydesdales, with the Dignitaries on board arrived and the official welcome and etc got The Games off to a good start.

The only female in the group was the mayor of Pleasanton, who was also a Falconer. There is a Birds of Prey exhibit at the Games.

We had the national anthem of Britain, Canada, and the U.S. performed by the combined bands, after which things wrapped up pretty quickly. We ran down to the British foods area, where the lines were huge, and made our selections. Jim secured us seats in the venue where the Browne Sister and George Cavanagh were scheduled to begin a set soon, and all us gals braved the lines for some lunch. Bangers Royale for all, I believe.

We didn’t get a good photo of the group due to bad lighting (sun in wrong place) and poor positioning on our part (not the front row). I didn’t buy a cd this year either….I have them all! I did, however, buy one of Diana’s mystery books. 🙂

Whew…that will have to do for now. I’ll finish up for today with the promised picture of Hubby Dearest in his new kilt. For the record, it is the Irish National Tartan, and he is a McNamara.
