How Does Your Garden Grow?

Remember that old Nursery Rhyme?

Mary, Mary, quite contrary,
How does your garden grow?
With silver bells, and cockle shells,
And pretty maids all in a row.

Well, I’m not Mary, and I don’t have any of the things in my garden that she had in hers, but I DO have a garden this summer! It’s amazing, really, because I wasn’t planning to plant one this year, with all the time I expect to be away. However, with the plum tree all done for the year, when free seedlings were offered, I couldn’t resist.

So, with the help of my trusty Hubby Dearest and his roto-tiller, on Saturday we made ready the old raised bed. Then it was ‘add water’ and let sit for a day. (or two) Last evening I finally planted all my little starts in their final ‘resting’ places.

The bed looks empty now, but those little plants are all vines and will soon attempt to ‘take over the world’. Which is to say, they’re gonna spread out…. a lot!

First, the watermelon plant

Then, the Zuccini

And, finally, the cucumbers. The big ones, not the pickling sized ones this year.

I also planted a bunch of herbs in a big pot. I’ve got two kings of basil, Cilantro, and hmm, maybe it was three kinds of basil!

So,” eh….what’s up with you, Doc?”

  1. Can’t wait to watch your garden grow.

  2. I look forward to weekly growing photos! Thanks for reminding me that I need to get my boxes planted. I have 1 for herbs and then I need to find some shade-growing plants/flowers for the other. Unfortunately my side of the house doesn’t get too much sun.

  3. Hawkens of Smith and Hawkens, now that the company that bought it out is shutting it down, is thinking about selling good gardening tools again online, the core of his original business. Just FYI.
